Is 432 Hz New Age Schmertz? Well, despite the mountains of New Age muddle currently proliferating the Internet on this subject, that this is a 'healing frequency', that 440 Hz is 'evil' and 432 Hz 'good', etc, the only possible shred of evidence that 432 Hz was actually used as any sort of reference pitch in antiquity (given that the ancients did not understand what sound waves were, let alone did they have an oscilloscope to measure the number of Hz vibrations per second - unless the aliens who built the pyramids according to similar nonsense New Age claims, kindly lent them one!), was some interesting research done by John Wheeler on what the tonic pitch of ancient Israel may have been...

In this research, he assumed that the tonic pitch of the Levitical ensemble of singers and lyre players in the Temple of Jersusalem, would be based on the fixed pitch of the silver trumpets described both in the Biblical text (Numbers 10) and in the writings of the 1st century Jewish Historian, Flavius Josephus, who actually witnessed the ancient Temple services. As the length of the silver trumpets is given (about an Egyptian cubit), the pitch of the trumpet can therefore be calculated...which just happens to be about 432 Hz at sea level:

In order to capture the essence of what the sound of music in ancient Israel may therefore have sounded like, this video features a performance of "Hava Nagila" on my evocation of the Biblical Kinnor - the 10 string Biblical lyre once played by my very own, very ancient Levite ancestors! As well as a reference pitch of A at 432 Hz, I also use the wonderfully pure just intonation of antiquity to further enhance the 'authentic' feel I am trying to evoke in the performance...
