"For the Jews there was light, joy, happiness, and ye'kar (preciousness)." (Esther 8:16)

Purim is a celebration of transformation, where darkness turns to light and despair to joy. But why does the Megillah choose the rare and mysterious word ye’kar—preciousness—as the culmination of this victory? Ye’kar is no random choice—it is, in fact, the reversal of keri, the word most associated with Amalek. Amalek’s worldview is one of randomness, where events happen by chance and lack deeper meaning. Life, to Amalek, is disconnected from any grand narrative, and each moment is merely an opportunity for power and control. When things don’t go their way, frustration and anger arise, because they cannot see the greater story in which all moments find their true purpose.

But the Jewish vision of life is the opposite: Ye’kar teaches us that every moment holds preciousness because it is part of a greater unfolding journey. Purim invites us to step beyond the illusion of randomness and into a life illuminated by meaning, connection, and joy.
